The process begins with completing accredited firearm training and successfully obtaining a proficiency certificate, followed by applying for a competency certificate through SAPS. This competency step confirms that the applicant understands firearm law, safety, and responsible handling, and is a legal prerequisite before applying for any firearm licence.
Once competency is approved, applicants may proceed with the firearm licence application, which is firearm-specific and requires detailed supporting documentation and a strong written motivation. The application is submitted to the Designated Firearms Officer (DFO) at the applicant’s local police station, where it is reviewed and processed. At Ultimate Firearms Academy, we assist clients with compiling complete application packs, drafting professional motivations, and ensuring all forms and supporting documents meet SAPS standards—helping reduce delays and improve approval success rates.

- Accredited training & proficiency certificate (theory + practical firearm handling)
- Competency application (SAPS 517) submitted to SAPS
- Supporting documents such as:
- ID copies
- Proof of residence
- Passport photos
- Training certificates
- Character references / questionnaires
- Firearm licence application (SAPS 271) for a specific firearm
- A detailed motivation letter explaining the need (self-defence, sport, hunting, etc.)
- Submission to the Designated Firearms Officer (DFO) at your nearest police station
- Background checks and evaluation by SAPS before approval
